‘A wonderfully responsive and assured pianist’ (The Telegraph), Ian Tindale is increasingly in demand as a specialist in song repertoire and chamber music, with partners on the song stage including Roderick Williams, Helen Charlston, Ailish Tynan, Soraya Mafi, and Benjamin Appl. For BBC Radio 3 and BBC World Service, he has performed with New Generation Artists at London’s Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, the Wigmore Hall, and at the Barber Institute, Birmingham.
Ian’s recent UK festival appearances include the Aldeburgh Festival and Edinburgh International Festival with tenor Nick Pritchard, and the Oxford International Song Festival, where he premiered a work by Emily Hazrati as part of a recital with Soraya Mafi. An alumnus of Selwyn College, Cambridge, and the Royal College of Music, London, he was awarded pianist’s prizes at the Wigmore Hall/Kohn Foundation Song Competition, Kathleen Ferrier Awards, Royal Overseas League and the Gerald Moore Award. With ECHO Rising Star and baritone Josep-Ramon Olivé, he performed across Europe in the 2018-19 season including at Palau de la Música (Barcelona), and Het Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), and with tenor Santiago Sánchez he has given recitals at Wigmore Hall and Theater Bonn in April 2026. Hailed as ‘an articulate and sensitive partner’ (Opera Today), Ian’s keen eye for diverse and unusual programming has led to invitations to curate and perform song recitals for the Ludlow English Song Weekend by Iain Burnside, for the Samling Institute Showcase at the Wigmore Hall, and for Salle Bourgie (Montréal) with Julien Van Mellaerts and Harriet Burns as part of their ‘Complete Schubert Lieder’ series.
Ian’s expanding discography celebrates his longstanding musical partnerships. With soprano Harriet Burns, his album of Schubert Lieder ‘Love’s Lasting Power’ on Delphian Records was praised as ‘a very fine disc indeed’ (Gramophone), and their second disc, ‘A Short Story of Falling’, features two world premieres by Christopher Churcher and Derri Joseph Lewis alongside other English song. With tenor Nick Pritchard, ‘Little Wanderer’ on Signum Records featured songs by Benjamin Britten, Imogen Holst and Daniel Kidane’s ‘Songs of Illumination’, written for the duo in 2018. Nick and Ian will release their second album celebrating Gerald Finzi’s 2026 double anniversary this September.
In recent years, Ian has held roles as Official Pianist to the Wigmore Hall Song Competition, the International Vocal Competition in ’s-Hertogenbosch, the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels, and the Concours Musical International de Montréal. He is a song and vocal repertoire coach at the Royal College of Music, and as a Samling Artist he regularly works as a coach and pianist for the Samling Academy. In 2022, Ian founded his own song festival, Shipston Song, in the Cotswolds, and performers have included Laurence Kilsby, Roderick Williams, and James Gilchrist.
